If you have safeguarding concerns about a child and wish to contact Wakefield Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) for consultation and advice, please ring 03458 503 503.
Please remember that if a child is in immediate danger, an emergency call should be made (999 on the telephone).
Our Safeguarding Commitment
Through our day-to-day contact with pupils and direct work with families, school staff have a crucial role to play in noticing indicators of possible abuse or neglect. Parents should be aware, therefore, that where it appears to a member of staff that a child may be in danger, the school is required as part of local child protection procedures, to immediately report their concerns to other agencies and professionals, which may include Social Care Direct or the Police.
Staff will respond appropriately to:
- Significant changes in a child’s behaviour
- Deterioration in their general well-being
- Unexplained bruising or other signs of possible abuse
- Signs of neglect
- Comments children make which give cause for concern

What is Safeguarding?
Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.
Safeguarding means:
- Preventing harm to children’s health or development.
- Ensuring children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care.
- Taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best possible outcomes.
- Protecting children from abuse and maltreatment.
At Normanton Junior Academy, all staff treat the safeguarding of pupils as our main priority by ensuring they take safeguarding duties seriously and promote the well-being of all our children. They do this by:
- Ensuring a safe learning environment for all children.
- Promoting a shared responsibility for the well-being of children.
- Developing and implementing effective measures to help us identify and report any safeguarding concerns.
- Working with other agencies and partners to support children and families.
- Keeping updated and well-informed to help raise awareness and understanding of Child Protection issues.
- Promoting an awareness and understanding of how children can keep themselves safe, including when online.

Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy – For Pupils (Child-friendly version)
Our Parking Initiative took place on Thursday 19th January 2023, in partnership with Wakefield Council Parking Enforcement, tackling inconsiderate or illegal parking outside school. Two warnings were given out on the day. Please do not drop off/park on the yellow zig zag lines around the school perimeter and therefore cause a significant hazard and danger to our school family. With the children’s safety in mind, we ask local drivers to be mindful of where they park, thank you for your understanding #staysafewakefield
Thank you for your support in ensuring everyone’s safety.
All children took part in the Police Off-Road Motorcycle Workshops with PCSO Devonport from West Yorkshire Police – Wakefield North East Off-Road Motorcycle Team. Years 3 and 4 had informal discussions about the role of the Police Motorbike within our community and how it helps to keep us safe. Years 5 & 6 discussed anti-social behaviour and the role of the Police.
A huge well done to the School Council who led a whole school assembly all about Bonfire Safety and how to enjoy this weekend in a safe way! Well done boys and girls! You were superb!
